Are you a refugee from Ukraine? Check if you're entitled to benefits

Are you a refugee from Ukraine? If you live in the Netherlands and are covered by the Temporary Protection Directive, you may be entitled to benefits. This depends on your situation.

Read which benefits you can apply for:

  • If you live in a rented home and you are registered with a Dutch municipality, you may be entitled to the rent benefit.

    Conditions

To apply, you need to meet these general conditions. However, an exception applies to refugees from Ukraine: you do not need a residence permit if you have a temporary protection status. This applies at least until 4 March 2026.

    Applying for the rent benefit

You can apply for the rent benefit online via Mijn toeslagen. You will need a DigiD for this. Mijn toeslagen is only available in Dutch.

However, as a refugee from Ukraine, you are reimbursed for medical care under the basic health insurance cover, since August 2022. This is the so-called Regeling Medische Zorg Ontheemden (RMO). As a result, you do not need Dutch healthcare insurance.

Should you nonetheless decide to take out Dutch healthcare insurance, for example to cover additional medical care, then you may apply for the healthcare benefit.

Third-country nationals

If you lived in Ukraine with a temporary residence permit and do not hold Ukrainian nationality, you are considered a ‘third-country national’ (derdelander). You are entitled to an allowance if you have temporary protection. Visit ind.nl to read when the temporary protection ends.

Are you hosting a refugee from Ukraine?

If the temporary protection for this refugee is ending and this person continues to live with you, this may have consequences for you:

  • If you receive the rent benefit, the refugee will from now on be your co-occupant for the rent benefit.
  • If you do not have a benefit partner and your child under the age of 18 lives at your address, then the live-in refugee will become your benefit partner.
