Why is the additional tax assessment so high?
If we do not receive a VAT return from you, we do not know how many invoices you have sent or received. That means we do not know how much VAT you have paid and received.
In that case, we estimate the payable VAT and impose penalties. Our estimate is based on fixed amounts. That means the amount of the additional tax assessment can be quite high.
You do not have to pay the full amount of the additional tax assessment if you file a nil tax return or if the amount on your return is less than the VAT stated in the additional tax assessment.
You only pay what you owe

A penalty of 68 euros is imposed for failing to file a correct or complete return, in case of a nil return, or if you are receiving a refund. You must always file a return, even if you have nothing to declare. In that case, you should enter 0.

If your return shows a lower VAT amount than the estimated VAT amount stated in the additional tax assessment, you pay the lower VAT amount, possibly with penalties.
